GRE Study Guide
Before graduating from college there is a lot to think about in terms of your future. If you’re done with college it’s finding a good job that will occupy your time and efforts. Those who plan to go on to do graduate studies are likely thinking about the GRE.
The Graduate Records Examination is the test administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and is used by graduate programs when weighing the qualifications for candidates applying to their programs. Other things are taken into consideration, but the score earned on the GED is one of the major components in the decision making process.
According to the ETS, studying and working to prepare for the exam will not be beneficial to the takers. This is supposedly because the test is not meant exactly to measure knowledge, meaning information could be reviewed and studied. Instead, the test is created to measure the ability to think and reason in different subjects.
The four areas covered in the GED are verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing. Each area is covered in a way that really allows you to show where you are academically as you take the test.
The four main subjects comprise the general GED, which is taken by all applicants and costs about ¤160. On top of this exam, and for additional cost, there are eight additional exams that can be taken as the student likes. These are more specialized in the various fields of study that the student may plan to go into. Many graduate programs require one or more specific sections to be completed which relate to the area of study.
While there are still paper tests available in some places, the exam is usually taken on computer. Three sections are multiple choice and the fourth is a written test. The test can be retaken and you are not likely to get many of the same questions as the first time because the question bank is very large.
As previously mentioned, the ETS doesn’t believe that studying will be very beneficial to those taking the test. This doesn’t stop people from using GRE study guides in order to give themselves the best possible chance of doing well. Some graduate schools are very competitive and even if preparing only gives you a slight improvement in your score, it is worth it for many for the correlating slight improvement in their chances of making it into the school of their choice.
There are many different types of GRE study guides you will find paper versions at the local bookstore or to buy online or you can simply check one out from the library. If it’s not available for check out, you can do your studying at the library.
Probably the most common GRE study guide type is found online. As a matter of fact, GRE preparation materials are given to all students who sign up to take the test. They are given software that has review material as well as practice questions. These are useful because they usually are questions that were once on the exam, so you know you are getting the same type of problems to solve that you will find on the test when you take it.
Many people don’t only rely on what is given to them by the ETS. They prefer to use a number of resources, hoping to get the most well-rounded prep possible. They may enroll in a class, which gives greater structure and time-organization to your studying. It also gives you the chance to take practice exams in a classroom environment.
Whether you are doing it online or in a classroom, probably the most critical part of your prep will be taking those practice tests. In order to study effectively you need to know where your weak points are. Taking the test in practice will show you what you need to work on and help you to prioritize what material you review.
When you know what you need to work on, focus your energy on that. If it’s writing, search for tips to writing the essays and giving the scorers what it is they are looking for. If math is an issue for you, study it. Don’t let one section drag down your entire score.
It’s worthwhile for anyone taking the test to learn as much as possible about how the questions themselves are worded and the best way to answer them. They often require analyzation and reasoning so it’s important to find some reliable practice tests that don’t only quiz you on the information but actually simulate the kind of questions you’ll be asked.
With a good GRE study guide you will have access to not only the review material, but a methodical approach to studying it, as well as other tools, practice tests and tips on how to approach the essays and understand the questions. You will be in the best position to succeed in this step to getting into the graduate school of your choice.GRE Study Guide
